Dependent eligibility concerns spark debate

March 26, 2008

Sister publication, Employee Benefit News' Editor in Chief Kelley Butler printed a Letter from the Editor in March which elicited quite a response from readers.

Dozens wrote in, some praising and others skewering Butler for her "mama bear" take on dependent eligibility audits, the subject of Associate Editor Chris Silva's Piece, "Removing children from the rolls" in the same issue.

Readers wrote in from around the country, some claiming audits "punish those employees who are playing by the rules," and others writing in to say they have conducted audits without any "major employee issues."

Some see audits as a necessary evil to keep rightful employees on the rolls, while others see the practice as indicative of employers who don't trust their employees.

Whether they're cheers or jeers, we're thrilled to see such a high volume of responses from readers and EBN plans to print them in their May issue.

But since we don't like to keep anyone waiting for months with baited breath -- Employee Benefit News and Employee Benefit Adviser are inviting participants for an exclusive Web seminar to share their views and vents on the topic.

Mark your calendars, because the call is taking place this Friday, March 28 at 12 PM EST. Register for the meeting using the link below:

https://sourcemedia.webex.com/sourcemedia/j.php?ED=100501717&RG=1&UID=0. Dial in promptly, because attendance is capped.

Robert L. Whiddon, editor of Employee Benefit Adviser will be moderating the call. He will be joined by Mark Rucci of Gallagher Benefit Services, Jim Kelly of Secova and Patrick Donahue of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.

We'd ask mama bear herself to join the call, but she's a bit busy. Join us in congratulating Butler, who welcomed her second child, a daughter named Mia, on March 21.
